Assessment & Progress

In September 2015 the Government introduced a new system to measure assessment and progress. As a result children are expected to be secure in their age related band at the end of the year. For example, for children in Year 3, it is expected that they will be Band 3 secure at the end of the year. This is the expectation for year 1 to year 6 who work within the National curriculum. Children in the Foundation stage follow the Early Years Curriculum and their progress in measured in age related month bands, moving to a Good Level of Development (GLD) judgement at the end of the year.

Every term we send home your child’s Pupil Profile (Year 1-6) that shows you our end of year target for Reading, Writing and Maths as well as showing their termly assessments towards meeting this target.

We also recognise the importance of securing the children’s best attitudes to learning and learning and so we also share with you information regarding attendance, punctuality, behaviour, effort, homework and uniform, using our colour coding system. Children also have termly Coley Coaching meetings with a member of staff to talk about their learning, helping them to realise what they are doing well and what they need to do to further improve.

In 2016 the Government introduced Interim Assessments for end of Key Stages (Year 2 & Year 6). New SAT tests were also introduced using standardised scoring. For children to meet the standard they need to score 100, based on a scaled score. Currently the Interim Assessments are still in place for 2018.

As a school, we want to ensure that we are delivering lessons and supporting children’s learning so that they leave each year group ready to access the learning in the following year and that when they leave Coley Primary they are secondary school ready. We have therefore introduced standardised testing so that we can ensure that children are on track to achieve a standardised score of at least 100.

We are currently using PUMA Maths Tests and PIRA Reading Tests. We will be sharing children’s test scores for your information. The test information gives an indication similar to the Interim Assessments, so children scoring 100 and above are in line or above the standardised expected score.

To further support your understanding of Assessment we would like to refer you to our Assessment Policy that has recently been updated, that can be seen on our school website. www.coleyprimary.reading.sch.uk
