December Visit

Today we visited the hospital for the first time in our role as Junior Carers. First, we were taken to the Board Room and met the Chief Nurse, Katie Prichard Thomas, who told us all about her job in the hospital. She started working as a nurse in 2001 and worked with patients who had respiratory problems. We then met the Chief Executive, Steve McManus who spoke to us about the Trust and that there were 6 sites and about 6000 people working across the Trust, including volunteers. He started his career in nursing and trained at the Nightingale School of Nursing.

Aaron, also a nurse, then took us to the ambulance bay. We had great fun meeting Faye and Sue. We loved sitting in the front of the ambulance and putting on the blue lights and siren. We learnt about some of the equipment on the back of the ambulance, including a defibrillator. We found out about some of the emergencies they have to attend and how fast they can get there.

We then went into children's A and E, there were lots of poorly people but we were taken to an empty bay and asked what we thought would make it better for patients. We all thought, more colour, more pictures and better lighting. We got to meet a member of the Play Team who help children to feel less anxious and scared when in hospital. We also talked to a Receptionist who told us all the information they need to collect when someone first comes into A and E.

Afterwards, we went to the Kennet Room where we got measured for our uniforms and were told how we would introduce ourselves to others in the hospital.
