Just before Christmas, we visited the hospital, where every year the staff wrap over 1,000 presents to give to patients staying there over the festive season. We had the chance to help with the wrapping and even decorated the trolley with tinsel, making it look very festive! After filling the trolley with presents ready to deliver to the wards, we wrote cheerful messages wishing the patients a speedy recovery. At lunchtime, we ate in the canteen, pulled Christmas crackers and laughed at the jokes inside, adding to the festive spirit of the day.
After lunch, we met Fergus, a very special dog who is a PAT dog! PAT stands for “Pets As Therapy,” and these dogs visit places like hospitals, schools, and care homes to help cheer people up. Fergus has only been a PAT dog for 8 weeks, but he’s already amazing at his job. He’s friendly, gentle, and loves meeting new people. PAT dogs are trained to stay calm and enjoy being stroked, which helps people feel happy and relaxed. Fergus loved all the attention we gave him.
Fergus joined us on our visit to Dorrell Ward, where we handed out some of the presents we had wrapped to the patients. He was such a hit with everyone! After that, we visited the children’s clinic and saw where they measure heights and weights. The walls were decorated with amazing murals, and there was a playroom and a television to help keep children entertained during their visits. Finally, we went to Dolphin Ward, one of the children’s wards, and gave the children a gift. It was lovely to see their faces light up and Fergus made the day even more special for everyone!
