Today, our Junior Carers visited the Burghfield Ward, where they took part in a variety of activities with patients living with dementia. From playing games to creating arts and crafts, the children enjoyed spending time with the residents - but the most powerful moments came through their conversations. One patient, who shared that he didn’t have any grandchildren, was especially moved by the interaction. He was overjoyed when the girls he had been working with surprised him with a handmade card. It was a touching reminder of the impact that kindness and connection can have. This was one of the most memorable and enjoyable visits our Junior Carers have experienced through the programme and it will stay with them for a long time.
Next, the Junior Carers met Georgina, the Strategy and Partnership Manager, who spoke to them about the Trust Strategy and the importance of their voices in shaping the future. The children were invited to colour in their own Strategy Tree - writing things they liked about the hospital on and around the leaves, ideas for the future in the clouds and suggestions for change on and around the roots. It was a thoughtful and creative session and the Junior Carers enjoyed reflecting on their experiences and sharing their views.
As this was their final visit, and the sun was shining, Maria took the Junior Carers to Oasis - the staff health and wellbeing centre - to enjoy their lunch in the garden. While they were there, a volunteer from a local community gardening group kindly offered to show them around. The children learned about the different plants being grown and heard how gardening can support wellbeing. It was a lovely way to round off the programme, giving the children time to relax, reflect, and enjoy their final moments together.
